Complexity research for a changing world.

We plan to establish the Complexity Science Hub Berlin as a new research institute dedicated to understanding the complex systems that shape our world. In close partnership with the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, which was founded ten years ago, we will develop state-of-the-art data science, mathematical modelling, and network analysis methods to reveal the intricate feedback loops that determine how our economy and society develop.

Why do we need a Complexity Science Hub in Berlin?
Germany is Europe’s largest economy but it has accumulated structural deficits that impede its development into a modern 21st century economy. Critical systems such as our industrial core, our social welfare system and the labour market suffer from interconnected crises with problems cascading from one system into others.

To recover the functionality of these systems, we will need a solid quantitative and predictable understanding of how they are connected and where there are leverage points for effective intervention. At the same time, Berlin lacks a dedicated complexity science research centre with the ambition to understand and eventually steer our systems. The Complexity Science Hub Berlin will change this.
